2SLGBTQI+ people across Canada deserve the conditions and support they need to thrive. Community-led 2SLGBTQI+ organizations are the ones creating and sustaining those conditions every day — advancing health, safety, housing, belonging, and economic wellbeing in places where systems have too often failed our communities.

Yet after decades of structural exclusion and chronic underfunding, Canada’s 2SLGBTQI+ sector remains in a precarious position. Many organizations are forced to operate year-to-year, constantly navigating uncertainty, short-term grants, and the real risk of closure with each new fiscal cycle.

That is why we are laying the foundation for a National 2SLGBTQI+ Endowment Fund.

Endowment models like this already exist in Canada. The federal government has supported long-term, community-anchored funds through initiatives such as the Equality Fund and the Black-Led Philanthropic Endowment Fund. A National 2SLGBTQI+ Endowment Fund would follow a similar path: a permanent, ethical investment fund designed to generate sustainable income year after year — resourcing 2SLGBTQI+ communities in perpetuity.

This fund would be administered through a national 2SLGBTQI+ foundation built by and for community. Stewardship of the endowment would be determined through a Government of Canada-led Call for Proposals, ensuring the organizations chosen to lead this work are trusted, accountable, and rooted in the realities of our communities.

A permanent endowment is more than funding. It is a pathway to long-term self-determination, stability beyond election cycles, and a future where 2SLGBTQI+ organizations can plan, grow, and serve communities without fear of disappearing when a grant ends.
